INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The Indianapolis police chief who oversaw the merger of the city\'s police department with most of the Marion County Sheriff\'s Department is being replaced.
The city\'s public safety director said Monday that district commander Paul Ciesielski (SI\'-sel-skee) will take over for Chief Michael Spears.
Public Safety Director Frank Struab didn\'t immediately say why the change was being made or what would happen to Spears, who was named chief in 2005 by then-Mayor Bart Peterson.
Mayor Greg Ballard kept Spears as chief while in 2008 most operations of the city and county departments were merged into a 1,700-officer agency.
Ciesielski is currently commander of the department\'s northwest district and spent several years as its official spokesman.
